This policy explains how Selenic Systems Ltd ("Selenic Systems", "we", "us" or "our") collects and uses personal data when you visit this website or use our mobile apps, and the rights you have under UK data protection law.
Who we are
Selenic Systems Ltd is a company registered in England and Wales (company number 17312090). Our registered office is Unit A, 82 James Carter Road, Mildenhall, Suffolk, IP28 7DE. For the purposes of the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR) and the Data Protection Act 2018, Selenic Systems is the data controller for the personal data described in this policy. The short version
- This website is a static, informational site. It uses analytics cookies (Microsoft Clarity and Google Analytics) to understand how visitors use it — you're asked to accept or decline these when you first visit, and can change your answer at any time.
- If you email us, we use your message to reply and keep a record of our correspondence.
- Our apps are designed to keep your data on your device wherever possible. Orbit Alarm's optional weather feature is the main exception — it sends a location you choose to a third-party forecast service (Open-Meteo) to show you a local forecast.
- We do not sell personal data. Orbit Alarm shows advertising, supplied by Unity Ads — you're asked when you first open the app whether those ads may be personalised, and you can change that answer at any time in Settings. Saying no doesn't change how many ads you see, only whether they're targeted.
Personal data we collect
When you visit this website
This website uses Microsoft Clarity to understand how visitors use it — for example, which
pages are visited and how people scroll and click. Clarity sets cookies (including
_clck, _clsk and MUID) and may record mouse
movement, clicks and scrolling. It only runs if you accept when asked; declining means
nothing is set or recorded. You can change your answer at any time using "Cookie
preferences" in the footer. See
Microsoft's
Privacy Statement for how they handle this data.
This website also uses Google Analytics to understand overall visitor numbers and where
visitors come from. Google Analytics sets cookies (including _ga and
_ga_*) and processes information such as pages visited, approximate location
(from IP address), and device and browser type. Like Clarity, it only runs if you accept
when asked. See Google's
Privacy Policy for how
they handle this data.
Our hosting provider, Cloudflare, separately processes limited technical information (such as IP address and request logs) strictly to deliver and secure the site.
When you contact us
If you email us, we process your email address, name, and message content to respond and maintain a record of our correspondence.
When you use our apps
Our apps are built to be privacy-respecting and to keep your data on your device by default. They do not require an account. Orbit Alarm shows advertising, described in Advertising in Orbit Alarm below; Catalogue does not.
Orbit Alarm stores your alarms, preferences, and any QR or barcode values you save for alarm challenges locally on your device. This data is not backed up to our servers or to your cloud account. Two optional features involve device permissions:
- Weather forecast. If you use the weather feature, the app sends the location you choose — either a city name you type in, or your device's location if you switch on "Auto GPS Location" — directly to Open-Meteo, a third-party weather service, to retrieve a local forecast. This request is made over an encrypted connection, without an account or tracking identifier. We do not operate a server in this flow and do not receive or store your location; Open-Meteo's own privacy terms govern their handling of the request.
- Camera. If you set a QR or barcode challenge for an alarm, or to dismiss the optional bedtime reminder, the camera is used only to scan that code. Scanning happens entirely on your device — images are not uploaded to us or any third party, and are not saved.
- Notifications. Alarms use notifications to alert you and to display the wake-up screen. These are handled by your device and are not shared with us.
- Crash and diagnostic reports. Orbit Alarm uses Google Firebase Crashlytics to help us find and fix bugs. If the app crashes or encounters certain errors, technical information — such as your device model, operating system version, app version, and a log of recent app activity leading up to the issue (for example, which alarm feature was in use) — is sent to Google. This does not include your alarm labels, saved QR/barcode values, or any other personal content you've entered into the app. This is on by default but you can turn it off at any time from Settings > Share crash reports. See Google's Privacy Policy for how Google handles this data.
Our Catalogue app stores product data and orders locally on the device, synchronising with your organisation's systems only where explicitly configured. Where Catalogue is deployed for a business customer, that customer is the data controller for any personal data it holds, and Selenic Systems acts solely as a data processor acting on their instructions.
Advertising in Orbit Alarm
Orbit Alarm is free and funded by advertising. Ads are supplied by Unity Technologies (Unity Ads), which acts as an independent data controller for the data it receives. We do not see, receive or store any of it ourselves beyond aggregate earnings figures.
The first time you open the app you are asked whether ads may be personalised. Your answer is stored on your device and passed to Unity; until you answer, the advertising software is not started at all.
- If you say yes, Unity may use your device's advertising ID, IP address, device and app information, and your interactions with ads, to select and measure personalised advertising. This relies on your consent.
- If you say no, you see the same number of ads, but they are contextual rather than targeted, and your device is flagged to Unity as non-personalised. Unity still processes limited technical data — such as IP address and device type — to deliver an ad at all, to cap how often it repeats, and to detect fraud.
You can change your answer at any time in Settings > About > Privacy Options, which reopens the same question. You can also reset or delete your advertising ID in Android's own settings (Settings > Google > Ads), which applies across every app on your device, not just ours.
Refusing personalised ads does not restrict any feature of Orbit Alarm. See Unity's Privacy Policy for how they handle the data they receive.
How we use personal data and our lawful bases
- To serve advertising in Orbit Alarm — on the basis of your consent where ads are personalised, and our legitimate interests in funding a free app where they are not.
- To respond to your enquiries and provide support — on the basis of our legitimate interests or to take steps at your request.
- To operate, secure and maintain our website and apps — on the basis of our legitimate interests in running our business safely.
- To provide our apps under any agreement we have with you or your organisation — where a contract applies.
- To comply with legal obligations that apply to us.
Cookies
The only cookies this website sets are the Microsoft Clarity and Google Analytics cookies described above, and only if you accept them when asked. You can change your answer at any time using "Cookie preferences" in the footer of any page. If we ever introduce any other cookies — for example, strictly necessary ones — we will update this policy first.
Sharing your data
We do not sell personal data. For our website we use Cloudflare for hosting and security, under a strict written agreement, and — if you accept analytics cookies — Microsoft (via Clarity) and Google (via Google Analytics) receive the data described above. In Orbit Alarm, Unity Technologies receives the advertising data described above; for the optional weather feature, the app contacts Open-Meteo directly, at your request, to fetch a forecast for the location you provide. Google (via Firebase Crashlytics) also receives crash and diagnostic data as described above, to help us keep the app reliable. Otherwise we share personal data only where required by law or with your explicit consent.
International transfers
Where personal data is transferred outside the UK, we ensure it is protected by an adequate safeguard recognised under UK data protection law, such as UK adequacy regulations or an International Data Transfer Agreement.
How long we keep it
We keep personal data only for as long as needed for the purposes set out above, or as required by law, after which it is securely deleted. General correspondence is kept for up to two years unless required longer for legal or business reasons.
Your rights
Under UK data protection law you have the right to:
- Access the personal data we hold about you.
- Ask us to correct inaccurate or incomplete data.
- Ask us to erase your data in certain circumstances.
- Object to, or ask us to restrict, our processing.
- Request portability of data you have provided to us.
- Withdraw consent at any time where we rely on consent.

If you have a concern about how we handle your personal data, please contact us first. You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk.
Children
Our website and apps are not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from children.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we'll revise the "last updated" date at the top of this page.
